Coffee break with Boyd Jones

I had the pleasure of having my next coffee break with Boyd Jones, Director of Sales and Business Development at Intium. Boyd joined me from his home in the San Francisco Bay Area, United States.

Thank you, Boyd, for a quick coffee and a chat. What was the first job you ever had?

Boyd: My first job was at a comic book store in my hometown. I was about 15 at the time and started working part-time. I was really into comic books and superheroes so it was the perfect place for me. I still have all my comic books from my youth and on occasion, I flip through them and take a stroll down memory lane. Some of the comics are also worth a lot of money today, which is always nice. Back then of course it was not cool to like Captain America or the Avengers. I never figured I would be a “cool kid” now.

I just have to ask, what did you think of the last Thor movie…Thor: Love and Thunder?

Boyd: I have not managed to see it yet but I have heard negative things about it. I am a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and have really enjoyed their films for years. I was a huge fan of the franchise in the 80s and it is very surprising now to see it become popular. Most of their movies are fantastic; some might be a hit and a miss.

You have an extensive and impressive resume. If you think back on your career so far, what project or endeavor has been the most memorable for you and why?

Boyd: I had some friends from Mainland China, who were into technology and we set up a small-scale angel fund to invest in tech in China. The experience was very interesting and worth its weight in gold. It was an exciting time as China was opening up more to the world and the internet. The possibilities were endless and the investment we made produced good returns on investment. Currently, again the country is more closed to the outside world, and the possibilities we saw at that time, were unique. Times change and the opportunities that are out there, change with it. Sometimes you only get a chance to do something at a certain point in time with no way of returning there as the business model might not make sense anymore.

How did you get started in sales and business development?

Boyd: I honestly have to say that I sort of fell into it. For as long as I can remember, I have been doing cross-border business. That meant that I have a lot of contacts on both sides of the world and have trusting relationships with these people. It didn’t take long for me to expand my business in that arena. I was working in Asia at that time and I saw an immense opportunity to bridge the gap between the opportunities in that part of the world and the rest of the world. In sales, I think it's very important to believe in what you are selling to others to be passionate and professional. In Intium I truly believe in our team, services, and platform and I think my passion for it is helping me do my job in sales. Intium has a lot of value to offer clients and I know how it could really help every single client.

How did Intium manage to persuade you to work with us?

Boyd: I have had a lot of great experiences dealing with Agu. I have worked together with both Agu and Mart and have been deeply impressed with their capabilities and the way they conduct business. They have a very high standard that they peg themselves against and I am the same way. So it was a natural progression to join them as we all stress excellence and quality of service in our work. At the end of the day, it was a combination of promoting something I believe in and doing it with the right people. Because of my experiences in private equity and venture capital, and angel investing, I saw the need for tech due diligence to be of better quality, faster, and more efficient.

To put it into superhero terms….I saw Agu and Mart as the Superman and Batman of technology due diligence and I wanted to join their team as… maybe Aquaman. Aquaman likes to work with the best and so do I.

If you think about the year ahead, what is your main goal in Intium?

Boyd: My goal with the Intium team is to build a base of very pleased clients, who want to work with us in the long term. In the year ahead, I am committed to ensuring that every client we work with is completely satisfied with the services we provide. We aim to build long-lasting relationships based on trust, reliability, and results. We believe that by providing top-notch service and consistently exceeding expectations, we can establish a foundation of loyal clients who are eager to work with us again and again. At Intium, we understand the importance of personal attention and tailored solutions, and that's why we work closely with each client to understand their unique needs and goals. Whether it's through in-depth consultation, prompt response times, or delivering on our promises, we are dedicated to making our clients feel heard, valued, and confident in their decision to work with us. Together, with our passion for excellence and unwavering commitment to client satisfaction, we know we can achieve great things.

Intium works 100% remotely most, especially in your case in the States. Does this way of working suit you and do you ever miss going to the office?

Boyd: I would prefer a hybrid approach to work, where we all could get together when we want and discuss things in person. Sometimes there is a little ingredient missing online, that you can get from face-to-face interactions. In my case, there is also a time difference involved as I am working in the USA and most other people in Intium are working in Europe, with similar time zones. On the one hand, that does make my job a little bit harder on occasion as I have to wait a bit to exchange information with Europeans. On the other hand, it makes us faster in our job as European people can hand tasks over to me when they finish their work day and I can take over or vice versa. Overall it is not an issue for me as I have been working in different time zones for many, many years and I am very accustomed to it.

We all at Intium know that you are very passionate about animals and animal welfare. Can you tell me why is this subject close to your heart?

Boyd: Well… I currently have five cats that we have rescued and they are all living with us now. I just think that every living being needs a helping hand from time to time. Especially during the pandemic, during which we all needed to be there for each other, I think a lot of animals were falling through the cracks. I found it important to step up and help some of the neglected animals as it was within my capabilities. To be honest, it just seemed like the right thing to do.

Who did you want to be when you were a small child?

...Boyd: I had a dream of being an astronaut. I was very interested in space travel and everything to do with space and my ultimate goal was to go into space one day. As a child, I used to look up at the night sky and be just amazed at how mysterious and exciting it seemed. I was always fascinated by stars, planets, and galaxies and what lies beyond our seeable space. Maybe one day..
